A Celebration of Same-Sex Marriage: Valentine’s Styled Shoot February 2016
It’s hard to believe it has been less than a year since the U.S. Supreme Court (FINALLY!) ruled in favor of same-sex marriage. Before I started my wedding planning business, I worked for many years in the advocacy/non-profit world, including working for several years on Marriage Equality and LGTBQ Rights. So when it came time to plan my first ever styled shoot, I knew we had to focus on same-sex couples. With the generous donation of so many stunning wedding dresses from the super chic and lovely Bride Boutique in Echo Park, we were able to feature several different bridal looks.
I was inspired to create this shoot by a visit to the Reptacular Ranch, a family-owned working ranch with animals galore. Cory and Jennifer Lagusker, owners of this special place, have recently expanded as a wedding venue in addition to the kid’s parties they host. I work with so many brides who want an amazing outdoor wedding experience, but simply can't afford what most venues charge. While Southern California offers a wide range of great options, from the ocean to the mountains, most also come with a hefty price tag. At Reptacular, you get their huge outdoor space for the entire weekend (plus tables and chairs!!) for under $2k. Seriously! If you are currently planning your wedding, stop reading this blog, check out Reptacular Ranch now, then come back and finish reading:)
The best aspect of Reptacular Ranch, besides the great mountain vistas, laid-back vibe and price tag… are the animals! We loved playing with the furry family members, from Vinny the Zebra to Pegasus the Pony. Having live animals at your wedding will make for not only stunning and unique photos, but also a great petting zoo experience for your guests! My favorite animals are zebras, and Vinny inspired the bright colors for this shoot, because what looks better with black and white than bold bright florals?
We also created an invitation suite with the theme of bright, bold colors that mirrored the florals.
Brooke Griffin from Fern and Bone vintage dish rentals and Scott Nelson with Cooper’s Attic rustic & vintage rentals helped transform this already wonderful venue and created the ultimate in rustic wedding chic with their awesome and eclectic rentals. If you are thinking about any kind of rustic or vintage theme for your wedding, I highly recommend reaching out to both Fern & Bone and Cooper's Attic as they will help bring your vision to life. The best part is they have seriously competitive prices for the sweet items they offer.
What every styled shoot ever needs is a kick ass bluegrass band, so we had the Rocky Neck Bluegrass Band play us some of their awesome tunes, and also loan their instruments to our bridesmaids for an impromptu wedding party jam session.
Next door to the Reptacular Ranch in the Angeles National Forest is the Oak Springs Trailhead, with gorgeous trees and pathways that would make for a great First Look location for your wedding. Here, our bridesmaids Sara, Anela, Emma and Brooke rock memorable yet affordable bouquets in their matching Free People bridesmaids dresses.
I love showcasing florals and tablescapes that are gorgeous and won't break your bank! These colorful rentals are from Pierre's Catering, one of my favorite tasty, but again crazy affordable caterers in the entire Greater LA area!
Along with featuring a celebration of same sex bridal couples, I knew I wanted to feature wedding vendors who embody the ethos of #CommunityOverCompetition. A large part of my work is helping clients find the right vendors they will click with, and I would recommend all the featured vendors in this shoot in a heartbeat! I love continually expanding and refining my network so I can offer honest assessments of the best wedding pros working in the Southern California area.
