Hi friends! It’s Jen Clary here, founder + owner + lead planner + multiple hat wearer here at Burlap & Rose. Taking time to look back on 2018, got me feeling all the feels, how bout you?!?
This was truly the best year of my life, with the birth of my baby girl Lucy. She has changed everything for the better, even how I view my work. Weddings have become even more meaningful, especially when I get to be part of intimate moments between parents and their children on their wedding day. Those once in a lifetime moments mean so much more now that I am a parent.
And so, it’s fun to take a look back on the year that was as we get ready for 2019! Thanks especially to the amazing couples and vendors our team got to work with; you are all beautiful, generous people and I thank you from the bottom of my heart! I’ve tagged all photographers + venues, so if there is an image you love, click to go straight to their website to learn more!
The year in Numbers + Photos:
Here’s our fun stats: We hit our goal for this year and worked with 18 wonderful couples in 2018; yep 18 for 18! We also had our 100th wedding in November(pop the champagne!) We worked at 12 new venues this year, in 13 distinct cities and three states! We had TWO blue wedding dresses this year, and over half of our weddings were interfaith/cross cultural.
A quick note on photos: Some folks prefer to keep their pics private, so we only share highlights from couples who gave the green light!
Our family moved to Austin, TX from LA at the end of December 2017, so January was still all about getting situated and getting started in Austin! One of our highlights was participating in The Swoon Event at 800 Congress in Downtown Austin, where we got to connect with some lovely Austin couples and meet vendors who have become some of our absolute faves in Austin, like Lunita Calligraphy and Fancy Fluff Austin!
In February we planned a maternity/baby shower styled shoot, and got to collaborate with some of Austin’s finest, like the incredibly talented Diana Ascarrunz Photography and Fine Feather Florals, along with the aforementioned Lunita + Fancy Fluff teams.
In March, our whole world turned brighter shades of wonderful, with the birth of Lucella Wren Clary. Her name means light, and she is absolutely the light of our lives. Later in March, our team also did our first Napa Wine Country wedding, and we were back at Millwick in DTLA, where we are lucky to be on the Preferred Vendor List.
In April, we were back at two of our favorite LA venues, the Unique Space in the Arts District, and hip boutique hotel The Garland in North Hollywood, with two of our sweetest brides, Lisa and Vanessa.
May was a fun month, with a wedding at an animal rescue farm and a personal favorite, our first Two Groom wedding in the spectacular little mountain town of Virginia City, Nevada.
June saw us at the Hummingbird Nest Ranch, for a gorgeous wedding with Jessica + Michael at this stunning location. How bout them views?!?
We also got to work with Christine + Wade in a sweet little backyard ceremony in South LA.
In July we got to focus on florals and create this stunning ceremony arch for Angela + Adam at the Hudson Loft. Ok, so we might say this a lot, but Hudson Loft is truly our absolute fave venue… so much airy light!
And on a personal level, we bought our first house with a BIG ol’ backyard!!
August brought one of our most unique weddings ever. Have you ever seen leopard print paired with tropical vibes and floral bridal attire? We hadn’t either… but we totally love how the infinitely unique Kate + Mike were able to pull off their one of a kind wedding at The Valentine in the Arts District in LA.
September saw us at the Hudson Loft again (yay!!!) for Jackie +Josh’s truly epic wedding. Their dog Spartacus played a key role in their day, and we LOVED getting to see how creatively they pulled together a vision with tons of custom signage, bright bold florals, and a rooftop ceremony with a killer view of DTLA.
October brought us back to Joshua Tree/Pioneertown for Georgia + Zach’s wedding, and one of the most gorgeous venues in the area, Le Haut Desert Aerie!
November was our busiest month all year, with a total of five weddings! (No, we didn’t sleep at all, but yes, it was totally worth it, because these were some of our fave couples all year!!).
November Highlights included:
-Our first wedding in Texas, with Krissy + Harry, just outside Austin at The Plant at Kyle in the rolling Hill Country.
-A gorgeous backyard wedding for Maggie + Aram in their custom built backyard saloon.
-Another lovely wedding at the Unique Space for Christine + Ryan, where we got to bring their Fall Wedding Florals to life.
-Our first TWO weddings in Santa Barbara, with Shauna + Graham’s wedding at the Presidio/Alhecama Theater and Bianca + Joel’s out of this world wedding at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum(Bianca + Joel’s wedding was also our 100th wedding at Burlap & Rose- woooohoooo!!)
Last but definitely not least, we were lucky to partner with Chris + Chelsea on their wedding journey. Blue Dress + Top Hat?!? Yes please! Thanks for helping us go out with a bang!
*End of the Year Reviews are always fun, even when it was a challenging year. I’m looking at you 2016!
