Jen is a native of Miami, and has lived all over the country. After earning two Masters degrees in Planning and Public Policy, she worked her way up in her first field of non-profit management and advocacy and served in Management positions.
Jen is a lover of all things weddings, but especially fun, funky, unique weddings that bring together all the loved ones of a couple and is a truly rad event. Prior to starting Burlap & Rose, Jen planned her own wedding celebrations and this is what inspired her to dare to start her own business and help others create their dream weddings! Jen also believes in giving back, and has a life-long history with volunteer work, from being a Girl Scout Camp Counselor to volunteering in National Parks. Jen recently gave birth to Baby Lucy, our newest team member... ridiculous cute pic at the bottom. Jen is currently a member of the Rising Tide chapters in LA and Austin, the Young Women's Alliance, and is also involved with Boss Babes ATX. Balancing New Mama Life and being a RockStar Small Biz owner is Jen's greatest accomplishment yet!

MENTORSHIP + APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
Since our founding three years ago, we have mentored several young women pursuing their dreams of entrepreneurial start-ups in the event planning and floral design industries. We have also created a robust Apprenticeship program where our Assistants train with us first during a trial Apprenticeship program, and learn the many ins and outs of the wedding + florals work we create! MEET OUR ASSOCIATE PLANNERS!
Born in Puerto Rico, Luisa Cartagena is a recent transplant to LA via Boston. In addition to serving as our Office Manager at Burlap & Rose, Luisa also holds the position of band director at the St. James Episcopal School. Luisa also loves playing music at weddings and is available to helpmaintains an active career as a freelance flutist and music educator.
Luisa is highly connected in the music industry with musicians that perform for renowned artists and active ensembles in the Los Angeles area. Her ensemble, Triola, is composed of flute, violin and cello which is a perfect combination for any ceremony and cocktail hour. Craving a killer Rock band for your wedding or a pianist for your cocktail hour? Luisa can help you find some of the best musicians in Los Angeles to perform for your event.
Aletha has always been a planner, from parties and vacations to outings with friends or with children as a nanny. Aletha has a background in theatre, film, and childcare. In other words, lots of creativity and wrangling! Working as an assistant with Burlap & Rose has given her the courage to follow her dreams and start her own wedding and event planning business, Romance and Revelry. Aletha’s goal is to create whimsical and fun weddings that your guests won’t stop gushing about and to ensure that your wedding day runs as smooth as can be.
Kat Garner grew up in beautiful Los Angeles and currently lives in Redondo Beach. She studied Visual Communications and Costume Design for Film and Television at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in downtown Los Angeles. Kat also works as a freelance wardrobe stylist and has a love for fashion, florals, and events. She's marrying her long time love Tim this Fall and understands all the fun of wedding planning!
Alex Sato is a native of Pittsburgh but moved to LA 7 years ago. Alex recently got married herself, and has a passion for pickling and canning, floral arranging, and dinner parties. You can usually find her working as the Grants and Contracts Manager at The Center at Blessed Sacrament, though on weekends in her spare time she loves helping to coordinate beautiful rituals and wedding days!
MEET THE SISTERS!
Sometimes we bring in the sisters to make it a family affair! With five girls in this family, we were always playing dress-up and having mock weddings, so brining on the sister crew is a natural fit! From left to right, meet Dylan, Jessica (That's Jen on her wedding day in the middle!), Jamie and Taylor. Equal parts smart, savvy, sweet (and ok, adorable!) our sister crew all know how to bring together an amazing party!
The sisters will often join for out of town weddings, or larger productions when we need extra hands on deck!
Last but not least rounding out our team is our Chief Support Officer, Main Advice Giver and Husband Role Model. Also hailing from Miami, Joey is Jen's partner in the biz and life, and often the perfect assistant for destination weddings. When Jen and Joey travel for weddings together, Joey often helps with set-up and break-down, and helps keep everything light with his amazing sense of humor. Joey is an avid birder and will tell you more than you ever knew about birds if you ask! Joey is also an Ordained Officiant and can be booked for Officiant Services. He will also often help with larger design and floral productions, and out of town weddings, and you can often find him with a camera in hand pursuing his love of photographer.
